Systems Oriented Design / Systemorientert Design (NO)

The designerly way to work with systems

The main mission of Systems Oriented Design is to build the designers own interpretation and implementation of systems thinking so that systems thinking can fully benefit from design thinking and practice and so that design thinking and practice can fully benefit from systems thinking.

We recently published a small book to be used as an easy way to get into Systems Oriented Design. It was written by Jonathan Romm, Adrian Paulsen, both from HALOGEN, and me. Published by the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Together with Elisabeth Skjeltens book, Complexity and Other Beasts they form a pair that we hope will be valuable in practicing SOD.

Bot books can be ordered at while Complexity can also be bought here

Here a small taste from the content:

Workshop at Chalmers-2015

Every January i get a friendly invitation from professor Jaan-Henrik Kain at Chalmers School of Architecture in Gothenburg. These are truly international classes and they learn Gigamapping quickly. Nice to see that systemic design is picking up at some few architectural schools as well.

Here some pictures from this years workshop.

Two Special Issues on Systemic Design Released

The two announced special issues on systemic design have now been published.
These two issues conclude the Relating Systems Thinking and Design 2 (RSD2) symposium from 2013 hosted by the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in Oslo Norway. The symposium initiated a three step process. With a call for abstracts, call for working papers after the symposium and production of the symposium proceedings and finally the development of full papers that were peer reviewed and published in the scientific design research journal Formakademisk.

This year’s symposium, RSD4 was a great success and follows a similar process. The proceedings including the extended abstracts, working papers, presentations and eventually videos will be published hopefully in February. The further publication process will be announced.

The procedures and calls for RSD4 2015 will follow soon.
So stay tuned to the activities and progress made in the field of systemic design.
