H-SEIF: Human Systems Engineering Innovation Framework
Research mediation and popularisation are highly wanted and supported by the Norwegian Research Council and other funding bodies. The research popularised and presented here is a summary of two sequential research projects investigating methodologies in an industrial context. It is of great value to feed back the results in an easily accessible manner to the partner organisations and beyond. The two booklets were meant to help personnel at the participating industrial partners and academic institutions and other interested actors to get an overview of the projects.
The H-SEIF Projects
HSEIF were two sequential research and development projects financed by the Norwegian Research Council
The research was led by the USN, the University of South East Norway and its Norwegian Industrial Systems Engineering Research Group. This group is geared towards design thinking, and they are grounding much of their perspectives on Systems Architecting, a development in Systems Engineering that is closely related to how we think in SOD.
Systems Oriented Design supported the process of merging a more human-centred and designerly approach to systems engineering in high-tech enterprises.
Through the HSEIF projects, our Systems Oriented Design team at AHO aimed to maintain a close dialogue with the Systems Engineering environment at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) and their partners. HSEIF2 utilized SOD’s practical, design-oriented approach, focusing on Gigamapping and its impact in interdisciplinary workshops.
H-SEIF 2, 2020-2024
Collaboration with the industry confirmed the value of SOD in early-phase innovation and provided ideas for further research on capturing and conceptualizing data. Involving people in Gigamapping is a way to capture data from people’s experiences that might not be data in the form of tables but captured in people’s memories like tacit knowledge. This is a very important source of data when working with innovation.
One of the participants in HSEIF2, Espen Strange from Kongsberg Maritime, has been studying SOD at AHOs executive master program and has used it in KM to dive into hyper complexity: ZIP-Clustering thesis.
This booklet was created and edited by Carla Gutterud from Semcon.

HSEIF 1, 2017-2020
H-SEIF-1 was a research project financed by the Norwegian Research Council, led by SEMCON, the University of South East Norway and the Norwegian Industrial Systems Engineering Research Group, partnering with AHO and a number of high-tech companies.
Here is a booklet that sums up three years of H-SEIF, a research project to develop new methods for human-centred systems engineering. H-SEIF partners are the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), the main academic partner, and the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), together with four tech companies, with Semcon as the project owner.
H-SEIF was an R&D initiative from the Systems Engineering (SE) environment at USN Kongsberg. This environment emphasizes systems architecting as a designer-inspired thread in SE, design thinking with long term connections to Stanford d.school, and concerns about rethinking the role of humans in engineering.
The booklet reports on tools, methods and perspectives, explored and partly developed in the R&D project. It was created and edited by Palak Dudani (AHO), with project management by Andreas Wettre (AHO) and illustrations © On Board Innovations. Published by USN.
Through 2017-2020 the H-SEIF-1 research project has engaged many people across organisational and disciplinary silos. This booklet presents a summarised version of their work.
